Very observant! You must be looking at the pic with the bike in the 34 cog, it is set up with as short a chain as possible to keep the chain slap to a minimum. The other thing I was trying to do is keep good tension in the chain as with no front deraileur if the chain were to come off it would make you get off and mess with it - no "shifting" it back on. It is very close to or at max extension in the 34, much like a bike with a triple in the large cog out back and large chain ring in front. It does work nice set up like this - shifts perfect - and in the taller gears the extension looks normal. The chain has yet to come off when riding in this configuration.
