The Time Has Come

Greetings to all the FAT COGS members out there!

After much thought, I have decided to sell my custom 1987 Wicked Fat Chance. I wanted to put this out here first to see if any Coggers may be interested.

I will post photos and a price later on. There will be several extras which I will list later on as well.

I will be able to deliver anywhere in New England and will consider personal delivery as far south as Virginia and as far west as Ohio.

I have the ability to crate and ship internationally from where I work now and that extra cost can be negotiated depending on the destination.

I have owned the bike since new. It has several custom touches and was repainted dusky rose shortly before Somerville closed. It has cleared over decals now.

Reach out if you may be inclined to own a legitimate piece of Fat City Cycles Somerville history.

I am eternally grateful for all the kind word many of you have expressed to me over the years here. It means so much to have my work validated with such praise.

I intend to stay around here as long as possible.

All the best and Happy Holidays to all

Here are some pics

She is my custom 18" Wicked Fat Chance. Serial Number 87777. The chainstays were shortened just a little bit (>1/8"). The seatstays are straight gauge .028 dillsburg 4130. The rest of the tubeset is standard True Temper. Rear dropouts are double eyelet Shimano. (they welded the best). The original paint was a semi-harlequin. The main triangle was white with black decals and the seatstays, chainstays, and box crown fork were red on one side and blue on the other. The paint was by Hoss Rogers (now a custom jeweler in Taos, NM hossrogers.com Miss ya buddy)
In either '90 or '91, I updated the frame. It become my silicon-bronze TIG brazing test frame. I added the double-chin gusset (named by yours truly), a third water bottle mount set on the bottom of the down tube, a top-pull front derailleur, fender mounts on the seatstay bridge, new brake mounts with the laser-welded spring plate and replaceable screw-in mounts. I did all those by TIG brazing. I also decide to retire the box crown fork. I put the real FAT in Fat City Cycles and was afraid it might crack under my bulk (200+ lbs including food baby) like we had seen some others do. I loved the look of the original design so I never put gussets on it. I built a standard Fat City unicrown and it is on the bike now.

The stem is custom-built by me for my riding position.

When it was apparent that Somerville was closing, I had Mike Flanigan strip it and he painted it dusky rose with cleared over decals. It does not have the Made in Massachusetts decal or the Chris Chance signature decal but I recently purchased a decal set for my Ti Fat and there is an extra one of each if the buyer wants them.

The parts are mostly a mash-up of Shimano Deore, Deore XT, and an XTR front hub. Mavic rims front and rear with DT stainless butted spokes and alloy nipples. 8-speed cassette XT rear hub. Probably a Shimano chain. Probably not the original. I lost the original Magura brake levers when I moved to Maine in 2003 (thank you ex wife). Oh well

IRD 26.4 mm seatpost with a steel Turbo saddle. Nothing extravagant. I have the original True Temper T2 7075 aluminum handle bar with shims to fit a 1" ID stem. There is an Easton Taperlite handlebar on it.

There are a couple of small nicks in the paint, most of them resulted after Dan Dennen (the guy on the tricycle in the Greetings From Somerville postcard and my former bro-in-law) and I rode through the Ted Williams Tunnel in Boston while it was still under construction. We snuck in on the Sunday of a Memorial Day weekend at the Southie entrance and rode all the way through to the Eastie exit by Logan Airport. There we encountered a high fence that we had to throw our bikes over and then climb over to escape. We made it but my Wicked got a couple of scratches in the process. War wounds. All loved and ridden mountain bikes have them.

Overall, I would grade the condition a 92 out of 100. Parts are mostly middle-of-the-road and period correct.

I will entertain offers from any interested Cogger before it goes to the dreaded Ebay abyss. It's a bit painful to let her go. She served me well. I learned a lot building her and I had some incredible experiences riding her. But she has been hanging in my basement since 2006 without moving much, all the while giving me the evil eye as I pedal my fat ass on my peloton. (Old_FAT_ Weldah on peloton BTW)

Serious inquiries preferred or just reply to make fun of me. I don't care.

I also have a small Buck Shaver that I bought here for my wife but she never rode it. Paid $500. It's in decent shape but nowhere near as nice as the Wicked. I could do a package deal.

If you are outside of my previously stated delivery area, shipping will be negotiated. I can ship anywhere in the world from my current employer (unless I win Powerball tonight and resign on Monday) But the possibility of that happening?

FAT CHANCE!!! well, maybe a slim chance. Who the eff knows.

I will post more photos as I plow through them tonight to get them edited for posting.

I will continue to be on this website for as long as it exists and as long as I am able to do so.

Interacting with you all and providing information and historical stories means more to me than you all will ever know.

Sincerely,
Scott "I-ROBOT" Bengtson
Hudson, MA

oh, and this will include one special, highly coveted swag item that will be a surprise to the buyer.
