Finally able to add to this Posting!
First off just wanted to boast that I've owned well over 30 Fat Chance MTBs since 1985!
My very first one was a used Black 1984 Fat Chance "Team Comp" with a Box crown fork and Front and Rear Suntour Roller Cam Brakes. I crashed that bike and twisted the fork a bit so the front Brakes never worked right again so I sold it and then bought a 1987 Wicked Fat Chance that is now owned by "Thomas the Fat Ruler" in Germany. My next bike was a Purple 1987 "Fat Chance" with the 69 Degree head angle that is now owned by Davis "The Bikeman" up in Maine.
A mint condition 1988 "Fat Chance" starts off my current list:

I bought my Wicked about a month ago. It came with a Manitou PRO XC Mach V suspension fork, which, I suspect is not original. I took it apart with the hope of cleaning and relubing it, not that I really know what I'm doing.....The elastomers at the bottom of the outer arms are SHOT! They crumbled in my fingers. Manitou says that they don't have parts for this fork.
a) Anyone know where I might get my fingers on some replacements / or have a suggestion for how to fake it?
b) If I can find a 1" fork, it probably will have longer travel than the original 50 mm, how badly will a longer travel fork affect the handling?
c) Any suggestions for where to look, other than Ebay?

No, there is no overlap in the production periods of the fork and the Wicked. The Wicked is years older.

I've got a 1988 Wicked with the Fat City unicrown rigid fork that came stock. I rode it like that for a while, and then put on a 1998 Manitou SX-Ti (or FS-Ti?) that has about 75mm or 80mm of travel. It did affect the handling a bit, but not awfully. I kept the Manitou on the Wicked and rode that as my main offroad bike for several years. Very sweet ride. Now that I've got another mountain-only bike and the Wicked is set up as road/off-road/touring/commuting, I've put the rigid fork back on.
As far as the Mach V, I'd say toss it. It was low-end even when it was new. I've got the Manitou ti fork still around, if you are interested in buying it. I had Manitou replace the internals on it with newer. It was blowing cartridges all the time, but the newer stuff seems to be much more reliable. It is a decent fork now... titanium springs with oil damping. $60 plus shipping and it is yours. Note: the fork does NOT have a cable hanger, so you have to be running V-brakes on front, rather than cantis. My Wicked is an 18" c-c, 19.5" center to top, so the fork should fit your Wicked, too.
The other option would be to put a rigid fork back on it. Best place to start looking would be your local shops. Used to be, they had tons of rigid forks around from when people moved to suspension, but I'm not sure if that's still the case.
